Abstract

Moringa leaves are one of the plants that can be used as antimicrobials because they contain secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and phenols. The purpose of this study was to make hand sanitizer spray preparations from the ethanolic extract of Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera L.) as an antimicrobial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Moringa leaf ethanol extract was formulated with different extract concentrations, namely in formulation I (8%), formulation II (10%), and formulation III (12%). The method used is the disc diffusion method. The hand sanitizer spray preparation was tested for characteristics, including organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, pH tests, and effectiveness tests. The preparation of hand sanitizer spray which has effectiveness as an antimicrobial against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli is formula III with a concentration of 12% ethanol extract of Moringa leaves. For Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, it has an inhibition zone of 10.1 mm. While for Escherichia coli there is an inhibition zone of 8.9 mm. The results of this study indicate the ability to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria.
