Abstract

Background. People living with diabetes are at risk of experiencing a number of serious complications and life-threatening emergencies. The magnitude of the impact caused, so that all parties, both the community and health workers, the government must participate in DM prevention efforts. Health literacy (HL) is a major factor contributing to effective diabetes control and prevention. Diabetic patients with low HL tend to have lower knowledge, attitudes, and adherence to self-care activities and glycemic control. Aim. To find out the description of diabetes mellitus emergency health literacy in people with diabetes mellitus at the Indonesian Air Force Hospital, Dr. Dody Sarjoto. Method. This research was a descriptive quantitative study which was carried out in January 2021. The study population was all diabetes mellitus patients who visited the Dr.Dody Sarjoto Air Force Hospital with a total sample of 41 respondents using a total sampling technique. Measuring tool used is a questionnaire in the form of google form. Results. Diabetes mellitus emergency health literacy in people with diabetes mellitus is still low where functional health literacy (n = 28, 68.3%), communicative health literacy (n = 26, 63.4%), and critical health literacy (n = 21, 51.2%). Diabetes mellitus emergency health literacy in people with diabetes mellitus is still low. Deeper analysis for further research with variable factors that can influence health literacy with an evidence-based practice level research approach.
