Abstract

Background: Poorly controlled diabetes can lead to various complications, one of which is diabetic foot
ulcers. Foot wounds are partial or complete damage to the skin that can extend to tissues under the
skin, tendons, muscles, bones or joints that occur in a person suffering from diabetes mellitus. Indonesia
is one of the 10 countries with the highest number of people with DM in the world. In Indonesia,
especially South Sulawesi ranks second highest after North Sulawesi. If not handled properly, DM can
cause various serious complications, one of which is diabetic foot wounds. Methods: This study used a
cross sectional design conducted at a wound care clinic in Makassar City and a sample size of 34
people using purposive sampling. Results: The results of the chi-square statistical test showed that the
relationship between age and the occurrence of DM foot wounds (ρ = 0.013), the relationship between
the duration of DM disease and the occurrence of DM foot wounds (ρ = 0.029) and the relationship
between foot care and the occurrence of DM foot wounds (ρ = 0.013). Conclusion: The connection
between age >40 years and the occurrence of foot wounds in DM patients and the connection between
duration of DM disease >10 years and the occurrence of foot wounds in DM patients can be prevented
depending on how clients control their blood sugar levels. Meanwhile, the relationship between foot
care and the occurrence of foot wounds in DM patients can be prevented depending on how the client
takes good foot care.
